To celebrate Hillcrest Mall’s 50th, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with some never-before-seen archival photos of the shopping centre. Since opening our doors on August 8, 1974, we’ve witnessed the transformation of both our community and the shopping experience offered. Join us for a nostalgic journey back to the early days of Hillcrest and see how the centre has continued to evolve over the years.

1974
Under Construction
Development begins at Yonge Street and Carville Road. A courtyard will serve as the community’s future gathering hub.
Grand Opening
Hillcrest Mall opened on August 8th with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring 100 stores. Greeters handed out 10,000 roses, Richmond Hill’s official symbol, to the first shoppers.
1980s – 1990s
The Early Years
The first fashion show was held in Centre Court for the mall’s 10-year anniversary celebration in 1984. Hillcrest Mall’s Centre Court and Food Court soon became the go-to hangout spots on busy shopping days, along with movie nights at the Cineplex theatres.
2000s – 2010s

Hillcrest Mall transformed with new stores and amenities. From the iconic Hudson Bay to the arrival of world-class retailers like Sporting Life, Indigo, Sephora, lululemon athletica, Aritzia, HomeSense/Marshalls, West Coast Kids, and H&M, Hillcrest Mall has redefined the shopping experience to better serve our growing community.
