Nowruz is a Persian holiday celebrating the arrival of Spring, celebrated by over 300 million people worldwide and thousands within the Richmond Hill community. Hillcrest is proud to celebrate alongside our community members.

About Hoor Dance
Founded by Anahita Nayebi in 2020, Hoor Dance Team celebrates Iranian Classical and Folkloric Dance while promoting mental health and community connection through dance therapy. Led by Anahita, the team uses movement to preserve Iranian culture, uplift diverse communities, and create inclusive spaces where art and healing come together. Hoor Dance Team has performed at cultural and political events across Toronto, including the Parliament of Canada, the Toronto International Dance Festival, and the George Brown College Mental Health Conference.

Hoor Dance

Nowruz, meaning “New Day,” is a 3,000-year-old celebration marking the first day of Spring. It symbolizes renewal, harmony with nature, and strengthening relationships. Traditions include spring cleaning, family gatherings, buying new clothes, and setting up the Haft-Seen table with seven symbolic items representing prosperity, love, health, and growth.
The Haft-Sin table is a key element of Nowruz celebrations, with each item symbolizing an important aspect of the tradition. Various items are placed on the table, each carrying its own unique meaning. Discover more about these symbols below:
Apple | Symbol of Beauty
An apple on the Haft-Sin table is a symbol of health and well-being, and its presence on this table brings the health of the members of that family to the end of the year.
Garlic | Symbol of Health and Medicine
Presence of the garlic on the Haft-Sin table signifies dignity, disinfection and cleansing of the environment and protection against evil.
Hyacinth | Symbol of Spring’s Arrival
Beautiful Hyacinth is a symbol of Spring and rebirth, and have a special place in Haft-Sin. This beautifully scented flower is used as a popular decorative plant by those who celebrate Nowruz all over the world.
Samanu | Symbol of Power and Strength
Samanu is a symbol of power, goodness and blessing. Its presence on the Haft-Sin table brings strength, patience and justice to family members.
Sabzeh (Sprouting Grass) | Symbol of Rebirth and Growth
Sabzeh is the symbol of rejuvenation and new life and it is one of the ever present items on this very ancient ceremony. Often this wheatgrass or sprouting grass is represented by a band of red ribbon.
Eggs | Symbol of Fertility
Eggs symbolize hope, fertility, and growth. Furthermore, they create a colorful mood that everyone can remember later into the year, a mood of flourishing and fruitfulness.
Goldfish | Symbol of Progress
A goldfish bowl symbolizes fish representing life. The red color of the goldfish is one of the reasons for its presence on Haft-Sin. The color of red symbolizes kindness, victory, and livelihood.
Clock | Symbol of Time
The clock represents the passing of time, and welcoming a new year with exciting adventures ahead.
Vinegar | Symbol of Patience
Vinegar is considered a symbol of immortality and its presence in the Haft-Sin table is known as removing life’s troubles.
